To install the plugin you will need Miscrosoft Installer v1.2
(sorry, but v1.2 is so much better than v1.1). It
is included in the downloaded Zip file (or there is "small Beta 2-2 Download"
which does not have the installer).
Automated Installation, Beta 2-2, Version 0.7.2
1. Download PGPpluginBeta2-2.zip (3M bytes). It
contains the following files:
PGPplu01.cab —
Cabinet file
containing the plugin files
PGPpluginBeta2-2.msi — Windows Installer program data
setup.exe — Installation setup program
setup.ini — Setup initialization file
installation.txt — Installation instructions
readme.txt — Latest stuff
InstMsiA.exe — Installer v1.2 for for
Windows 95,
98, and ME
InstMsiW.exe — Installer v1.2 for Windows
NT 4
The .cab file contains these files:
PGPadmin.dat — Only installed if not already present
PGPhk.dll — PGP Hook Library
PGPns.dll — The PGP Plug-in for Netscape Messenger
PGPtray.exe — The PGP System Tray Application
eula.txt — My End User License Agreement
license.txt — Network
Associates End User License Agreement
2. Stop PGPtray if it is running.
3. Unzip PGPpluginBeta2-2.zip to extract the files
to some permanent directory.
4. Read the installation.txt file.
5. Then run setup.exe to begin installation.
To remove or otherwise uninstall the plugin, run
setup.exe again, or use Windows' "Add-Remove
Programs" in the control panel.
OPERATION
1. Run PGPtray. When it is
run, an icon for it should be shown in your taskbar. This
is normal PGP operation. You can then run Netscape Messenger,
or start Messenger from the Netscape Navigator menu.
2. There are two added toolbar buttons in the
Netscape Messenger window, and there is an added PGP menu item. One
of the added buttons is
Decrypt and the other is a dropdown
menu button named
PGP.
3. When you Read a message, two new plugin
buttons will be displayed in the Netscape toolbar, one for
Decrypt and one for
Keys. There is
also a new menu item named PGP.
4. In the Composition window, there are three
new buttons:
Encrypt PGP, Sign PGP, and
Keys,
although because the buttons are small,
you can only see Encry..., Sign (..., and Keys.
In PGP options you can set fulltime encrypt and
decrypt. Your decision. Or you can encrypt/sign/decrypt
them on a message by message basis using the
buttons or menus.
Good luck. Have fun. Let me know what happens.
Overview
of Current Fixes or
Possible Problems
1. Problems with entering your passphrase have been reported by a
couple of Netscape v4.75 and v4.76 users, which is related to a problem
with Netscape and Windows.
2. Fixed decrypt window Delete button problem.
3. Enabled plugin
for German, Spanish, and French versions of Netscape. Additional languages may be added.
4. Works with Outlook Express now.
5.
Removed the PGP dropdown menu option in the Netscape Edit menu because
it crashed non-English Netscape, and it was redundant anyway.
6. You can now send encrypted messages as deferred mail (“send
later”).
7. All versions of Windows NT 4 now show toolbar buttons in the
messenger, read, and compose windows.
8. Changes were made in the way the plugin finds Netscape windows.
This should improve how it works for all versions of
Windows. PGP 6.5.8 has made some special provisions for Windows 2000.
9. To copy decrypted text in a read window, right click inside
the text window and use the clipboard menu that pops up.
10. The toolbars look best in "Pictures and Text" mode. Although,
they do function okay in either of the two other modes.
11. NOTICE: ** the plugin does NOT encrypt attachments.
12. Sometimes (rarely) Outlook Express (msimn.exe) can not release
itself from memory after exiting Outlook Express. Sometimes Netscape can not
remove itself when you exit Netscape which is not a problem with PGP.
13. In Windows 95, you may be unable to run the Microsoft games.
This may be a problem with any 16-bit application.
14. Also, I have sometimes seen Netscape hang in 95 when there
are no messages in the Inbox.
15. There may be additional problems and some
features to enhance. Please let me know what you find.
